CMS began in 1972 as Christchurch Music Society, the brainchild of a small group that has grown from strength to strength over the last 40 years. In our infancy, only concerts were performed, then in 1976 the first Gilbert & Sullivan operetta, HMS Pinafore, was performed. To begin with, only Gilbert & Sullivan operettas were performed. Then in 1988 we performed our first musical, ‘Fiddler on the Roof’.
The success of ‘Fiddler’ propelled our Society into a mixture of continuing with its roots of Gilbert & Sullivan operettas, combined with musicals, over the following years. Soon, our Society began putting on two performances a year, plus a Christmas variety performance, and in 1999 performed our first ever pantomime, Cinderella. The success of this pantomime saw our Society’s programme change to a pantomime in January, a main show in May and a charity show in the form of a variety performance in early summer.
We pride ourselves on the diversity of our members at CMS, always welcoming new members. Whether on stage, behind the scenes, or front of house, we use and build on the talents of our members creating a close-knit, family friendly community.
Over 40 years on, CMS is still a vibrant, fresh and exciting society that continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in our wonderfully intimate venue!
